Abstract

The development of Islamic civilization cannot be separated from the role of Islamic educational institutions themselves. It is the madrassa that is the milestone of spreading and preserving Islamic teachings. In madrasas, not only various Islamic sciences are taught but also some general sciences such as mathematics and astronomy. In the tradition of Islamic religious teaching, madrasas function as a place for scholars and students to learn, study, and develop religious knowledge. Madrasah Makkah is one of the Islamic educational institutions that contributes greatly to the development of education in Indonesia. The archipelago scholars are alumni of the Makkah madrasah. With the development of technology and science, madrasah Makkah began to move and innovate in order to be competent and relevant. This study aims to identify the typology of madrassas in Mecca and analyze the contribution of Mecca madrassas to Islamic education in the modern century. Considering that Makkah is the center of the development of Islamic traditions. The result of this study is that modern Mecca madrassas integrate Islamic teachings with general education to respond to globalization and societal changes. Thus, the madrasah education model must innovate without abandoning Islamic values.
