Maintaining the integrity and unity of the nation and state is a non-negotiable need. The flow of high political participation and freedom can lead to the emergence of various distortions and paradoxes that raise concerns. This condition occurs because, along with increasing political participation and freedom, this results in increased political polarization. The strengthening of religious populism tendencies and the use of identity politics issues in electoral contestation has repeatedly occurred in elections in Indonesia. The spread of fake news and hate speech is very difficult to control, especially when using religious labels that trigger division in society.The 2024 presidential election will be a test for Indonesian democracy in facing religious populism and issues of identity politics. Both can be a threat to healthy democratic practices, because they can divide society and trigger prolonged conflict. Wisdom is needed to anticipate and prevent religious populism and identity politics by all components of the nation. This article uses research methods with a qualitative approach to produce descriptive data.
